I personify the indomitable American spirit — a product of
perseverance —and the collective story of those searching
for a better life and freedom. My family’s story is one of
triumph over adversity: As a very young woman, my Polish
grandmother weathered an incredible storm en route to America,
fearlessly facing possible death. At journey’s end, she
bravely set foot on Ellis Island finally landing upon solid
ground. It was upon this ground that she discovered home. And it
is upon this land, America, where I set my own path to
opportunity, thanks to her and all those who came before me.
