Man on a Mission

(As told by Scott, see here with grandfather, Gerald) My
great-grandfather, John, was born in England, where he worked
tirelessly in the mines until an unfortunate explosion left him
injured. Further tragedy struck when his wife died during
childbirth, leaving John to care for their six children. He
eventually remarried but instead of returning to the mines, he
chose to start a new life in America. His family came through
Ellis Island in 1918 and settled in Central Falls, Rhode Island.
John loved America and wished to defend her valor: At the age of
52, he attempted to join the U.S. army to help fight in World War
I, but he was told he was too old. Still wanting to do his part,
he chose to enlist in the Canadian army and said he was ten years
younger that he really was. He was accepted and served in the
Canadian army for over a decade. My ancestors had no guarantees
as to how their journey would turn out, but they relied on faith
and courage to help guide them. I am proud of my
great-grandfather and all he accomplished, and I am certainly
proud to carry forth the Lindley name.
