(As told by Manny, seen here with father Dominic) In 1920, my
grandmother arrived at America's door along with two hundred
fellow immigrants, speaking only Italian and familiar only with
tales of an American land she barely knew. During her long
arduous ocean voyage, she had contracted chicken pox and was a
very sick 14-year old girl. It was necessary for her to spend 40
days in the Ellis Island Hospital, but thankfully she survived
the ordeal. Through fate, she fell in love with and married an
old friend from Italy, who had arrived in America in 1912.
Together they raised a family that believed that with opportunity
comes obligation. My father, Dominic, together with my mother,
Louise, carried forth this commitment to family. They made every
sacrifice to provide their three sons with a quality education so
that we could pursue our dreams. Still today, my parents believe
that opportunity is not a birthright and should be cherished,
cultivated, and nourished. Everyday I honor my family's legacy by
trying to be the best person and best leader I can be. I proudly
lend my support, and the support of the Phillips-Van Heusen
Corporation through the ARROW brand, in helping to preserve Ellis
Island, the birthplace of so many special American stories.
