My grandparents traveled to America from Poland, Russia and the
Ukraine. All of my ancestors had one thing in common: they shared
sacrifice, sometimes intentional and often times unavoidable,
which symbolized their strength in times of adversity. I
thoroughly believe the importance of Ellis Island goes beyond our
physical borders, representing an undying spirit of the countless
stories told and untold. Often we forget where we came from, and
so the movement to preserve this special place is one that
simultaneously saves our past and defines our future. I see Ellis
Island in the same sort of way: It's a snapshot held in time- a
reminder to all of us that anything is possible with hope,
courage and determination on your side.
